Limits of these numbers

The two counts measure different things. The Census counts establishments, meaning locations with a payroll: a chain with 40 sites counts 40 times, and a one-person shop with no employees is not counted at all. Sales.co counts businesses with a public listing and an email address on file, sorted into a list by their business category. The ratio of the two is a rough guide to how much of a market a list reaches and cannot be read as a coverage rate: a list can fall short of the Census count because many locations publish no email, and a ratio near 100 (roofers are at 97) does not mean every roofer is covered, because the two counts do not define a business the same way.

Each Census code is the closest one available, and it can differ from the list. Plumbers and HVAC contractors share one code, gyms share theirs with sports clubs and recreation centers, general contractors map to all building construction, and marketing agencies map to a code that also holds public relations firms and direct mail. The table marks each code that is wider than its list. The doctors list has no Census count because physician offices leave out the medical centers and urgent care clinics the list includes. The Census figures are for 2023; the Sales.co counts are of September 3, 2026 and are a floor, since lists are filled to order from more sources.

What to do with this

Use the Census count to size the market and the Sales.co count to size the part you can email. If a state you sell in has a low count per 100 establishments, plan on mail or calls for the rest. Before you pay for any list, open its sample and check the columns (the B2B email list providers compared page lists what to ask any seller). All 37 lists counted here are on the email lists page at $295 each.

FAQ

How many restaurants are in the US?

618,476 restaurant and other eating-place establishments with paid staff in 2023, per the Census Bureau's County Business Patterns (NAICS 7225). The most are in California (79,696), Texas (53,191), New York (44,870). A chain counts once per location. Sales.co has 54,435 restaurants on file with an email address (a separate figure from the Census count).

How many plumbers are in the US?

The Census counted 111,207 plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractor establishments with paid staff in 2023 (NAICS 238220, which puts plumbers and HVAC firms in one code). One-person shops with no payroll are not in that count. Sales.co has 23,832 plumbers on file with an email address and 35,374 HVAC contractors, two lists compared with the same Census count.

How many gyms are in the US?

41,556 fitness and recreational sports centers with paid staff in 2023 (Census, NAICS 713940). That code also holds sports clubs and recreation centers, and martial arts schools are mostly classed elsewhere, so it does not line up exactly with gyms. Sales.co has 6,291 gyms on file with an email address.

How many roofing companies are in the US?

25,519 roofing contractor establishments with paid staff in 2023 (Census, NAICS 238160). Sales.co has 24,758 roofing companies on file with an email address.

Why are the Sales.co counts lower than the Census counts?

They count different things. The Census counts every location with a payroll, whether or not it publishes an email address. Sales.co counts businesses with a public listing and an email address on file. The two do not define a business the same way, so the ratio between them is a rough guide to reach and no coverage rate.
